In the last few weeks, winter has kicked in to high gear in many parts of the US of A...so now's as good a time as any to look at
Skate or Die's less well-known cold-weather friend,
Ski or Die:
(I'm still deciding)
Skiin' in a Winter Wonderland
Those of you familiar with its urban/wheeled predecessor will find many similarities (Skate on the left, Ski on the right),
the terrifying mouse-over-for-hints style of Rodney's Skate Ski Shop,
the five-event layout as you toodle around the
level hub,
and how all the
minigames are somewhat playable, with semi-intuitive button configurations,
in defiance of almost all NES and SNES minigame tradition.
It's even got a greater variety of events than Skate or Die
Skate or Die was a pretty serviceable minigame compilation, even though two or three of the events were pretty close to clones of each other.
Ski or Die not only gives you all of those "slidey ramp" and "hammer the button" games you've been craving,
MOVING half-pipe!
Ok, no need for a ruler -- we can tell how high I got when I clear the atmosphere.
Plus the standard "Downhill Competition" and "Downhill Stunt-o-Rama"
...in innertubes, no less!
Ski or...briefly blink then re-appear!
On top of that, it has the razzle-dazzle of a rail-shooter style Snowball Fight...
(Complete with the ever-popular "guy who pops up from the bottom of the shootin' area")
But best of all, that Snowboard Halfpipe
gives you points for tagging Mohawked Penguins,
and makes you eat snow if you hit Chainsaw Bunnyrabbits!
It doesn't get any better than that.
