Ah, sporting events. Is there anything more fun than attending a live sporting event?
That's not a rhetorical question; I honestly have no idea. Like all good video-game-appreciating shut-ins, I've never attended a live sporting event. Though video games have given me a pretty good understanding about what KINDS of sports exist, should I ever want to attend one!*
*: Baseball, basketball, soccer, and Madden 199X
Nevertheless, I've played quite a few Super Nintendo Games
meant to simulate a real sporting event (and a few that were meant to...well,
who the hell knows). And one of the ways they have used the Super Nintendo's superior graphical power to add greater levels of realism was by having more detailed spectators!
Yes, no longer would we have to settle for a sea of repetitive stick-figures...
The SNES had the capacity to show nearly photo-realistic pixel art plastered across the back wall of our venue! Let's take a look at how a few of these games harnessed that power:
Ok, so it's mainly a sea of repetitive MORE DETAILED dudes:
Super Bowling
Tessellating blobby cartoon crowd. Notice the Farside- or Simpsons-style faces with their crazy expressions and mustaches!
The XVII Olympic Winter Games Lillehammer
(enlarged for greater clarity)
The Speed Skating Crowd sit quietly in darkened awe...but the Ski Crowd? That's some wacky pixel art, there. Bonus points for not just tessellating a few generic dudes, but...what's up with the guy in the lower left corner?!
I van to suck your bluud!
Ok, that's a wrap for this week!
Pitfall Harry's out of town this week (I think he's attending a sporting event). So...anyone have anything else to add?
